To get from Bangkok to Koh Chang, you can travel by a private transfer (car or minibus), twice daily flights from BKK Suvarnabhumi Airport to Trat Airport (with either private or share minibus onward transport to the island), public bus and microbus or self-drive.



Bangkok to Koh Chang – At a Glance

  • It’s about 320km from central Bangkok to Koh Chang’s ferry pier at Ao Thammachat.
  • Travel time from Bangkok to the pier ranges between 4 hours (BKK Suvarnabhumi by car) and 6.5 hours (Khao San Road, North Bangkok by bus).
  • Flying takes just under an hour but you must add on travel time to and from the airports at each end.

  • Flying at standard rate is around 3,600bt per person, though there are web saver deals available. A private car from Trat Airport to your hotel on Koh Chang is 1,950bt (2 persons) with fast ferry ticket. A share minibus from Trat Airport is 800bt per person with fast ferry ticket.
  • From Suvarnabhumi Airport and Khao San Road, either a microbus or larger bus cost either 650bt or 900bt per person with fast ferry ticket and resort delivery.
  • A public bus or microbus from Ekamai or Morchit Stations, with a change at Saen Tung to a songthaew is the cheapest way to travel from Bangkok to Koh Chang. It’s 279bt per person for the bus and 290bt for the microbus. These prices exclude the songthaew from Saen Tung at 60bt to 80bt per person and the ferry ticket at 80bt.

A private transfer is a convenient, comfortable and safe way to get from Bangkok to Koh Chang, with the service using either a car or a minibus depending on the size of your group. This a door to door service with collection from BKK Suvarnabhumi or DMK Don Mueang Airports, your Bangkok hotel or Airbnb at a time of your choosing. They are also of course available from other Thailand locations such as Kanchanaburi, Hat Yai National Park, Ayutthaya, Pattaya, Ranong and Ban Phe (Koh Samet).

With stops along the way for snacks, refreshments and toilet breaks, journey time is around 4 to 4.5 from BKK Suvarnabhumi Airport to the fast ferry pier at Ao Thammachat. From a central Bangkok hotel, add another 45 minutes to an hour. Similarly, if coming from DMK Don Mueang Airport, you should allow around 5.5 hours.

With a private transfer, you drive onto the boat, where you can then wander upstairs, a nice vantage point for the approach to the island. The crossing itself takes 25 to 35 minutes. Once docked at Ao Sapparot on the Koh Chang side, you are delivered direct to your resort door, 5 minutes to 45 minutes depending on where you are staying.

Bus and Microbus Services from Bangkok to Koh Chang

There are also bus and other share minibus services from Bangkok to Koh Chang. None of these pick you up from your hotel direct.

Khao San Road Bus

The Boonsiri bus leaves from near Khao San road daily at 07.30 arriving at Thammachat Pier around 13.30. It’s 900bt per person with the ferry ticket. Kids 5 and over pay full price, 4 and under 1/2 price.

As the bus cannot go directly on the ferry, you are swapped to a share minibus for the final delivery to your resort on Koh Chang.

Suvarnabhumi Airport Bus

From Door 8 Level 1 at BKK Suvarnabhumi Airport, there are currently daily buses at 07.00 and 11.00 run by Suvarnabhumi Burapa Co. (SWB).

The seat price is 650bt per person with fast ferry ticket and delivery to your resort on Koh Chang. For resorts in Bailan and Lonely Beach, add 50bt. For Bang Bao and Bang Bao Beach, add 100bt. Children over 100cm pay full price, under 100cm 1/2 price. Babies, not toddlers, if on the parent’s lap, are free.

Public Bus and Microbus

999

From Ekamai Bus Station in the east of Bangkok, the 999 bus, run by The Transport Co., leaves daily at 07.45, price at 292bt per person, no ferry ticket. It arrives at Thammachat Pier around 13.30.

The return service is at 14.30 from the mainland side of Thammachat Pier.

Once on the island, you make your own way to your resort using share taxis, 50bt to White Sand Beach, 100bt to Lonely Beach, 150bt to Bang Bao. Please note the taxis only leave when full unless you agree with the other passengers to all pay a higher price.

This bus is also popular for passengers heading to Koh Mak, with the main speedboat pier, Laem Ngop, 10 minutes down the road from Centerpoint.

Cherdchai

Cherdchai operates regular daily public buses (43 seats) from Ekamai to Trat, 6 hours travel, 279bt per person.

Either the early departure at 05.00 or the next one at 09.30 will make the ferry to Koh Chang. You can ask to get out at the Saen Tung junction about 35km outside of Trat, where you jump in a share songthaew taxi for the last 25 kilometres to Thammachat Pier. Songthaews are around 60bt per person if full or you negotiate a price if only a couple of you. The ferry ticket is 80bt per person.

Alternatively, continue onto Trat and take the songthaew from there.

There is also a once week night bus at 23.30 on a Friday. Other times are at 11.30, 15.30 and 17.30.

Koh Chang Bangkok Transport Company

Koh Chang Bangkok Transport Company (https://minibustrat.com/) runs different sized microbuses from 05.00 till 18.30 from Ekamai or Morchit to Trat, 290bt per person.

For Koh Chang from Ekamai, you can take one from times of 05.00, 07.00, 08.30, 09.30 or 11.00 down to Saen Tung Junction and then swap to a songthaew taxi as explained above.

From Bangkok’s Morchit New Van Terminal (opposite the Bus Station) times suitable for Koh Chang are at 05:00, 06.30, 08.00, 09.30 and 11.00, same price as from Ekamai.

There are no direct buses from DMK Don Mueang Airport to Koh Chang. Use a private transfer direct to the island (quickest and easiest). Or cheapest, hop on the A1 shuttle bus to Morchit Bus Station and pick up a bus from there to Trat. The A1 fare is 30 THB, every 12 minutes from 07.30 to 24.00, duration 30 to 40 minutes depending on the traffic.

Flights from Bangkok to Koh Chang (Trat Airport)

From Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), you can fly down to Trat Airport (TDX), twice daily at 12.40 (PG305) and 16.15 (PG307), 1 hour duration. Prices are from 2,900bt if you book early on the web saver.

Return flights are at 14.10 (PG306) and 17.45 (PG308).

These times operate from 29/10/23 to 31/3/24, the winter timetable. From 1/4/24 to 28/10/24, they switch to the summer timetable. PG305 moves to 11.40 departure from BKK, arriving at 12.40 at TDX. Its corresponding return PG306 is at 13.10 from TDX (14.00 BKK). PG307 and PG308 are unchanged.

From Trat Airport to Koh Chang

Once landed at Trat Airport, you can use either a private transfer or a share minibus.to continue on to Koh Chang,

  • A private car is 1,950bt for 2 persons with ferry tickets, door to door. A private minibus is 2,300bt with ferry tickets for 4 persons. Please contact us for more information.
  • You can jump on the share minibus for 800bt per person, also with ferry ticket and door to door. Remember this drops off other customers as it moves down the island, not just you.

Self Drive from Bangkok to Koh Chang

Companies like Hertz and Budget operate in Thailand, so one other option is renting a car and driving from Bangkok to Koh Chang under your own steam.

The route is not complicated, but the car rentals come with English GPS too or Google Maps gives a clear route explanation.

As a quick guide, follow Highway 7 out of east Bangkok and continue on this until turning onto Highway 344 near Chon Buri.  Once on the 344, carry on until near Klaeng and then join Highway 3. Stay on this past Chantaburi until you reach Saen Tung, about 25km before Trat. Take a right at the T-junction onto the rural road 3156, signposted to Laem Ngop.  It’s about 20 minutes to the fast ferry pier. If you do want Centerpoint Pier, then simply stay on the 3156 for another 5km or so.

Road signs are in both Thai and English. The main highways are 3 to 4 lanes, fast. You’ll find frequent police checkpoints along the 344 (and they are keen on unwarranted stops).


Other Options

You cannot take a scheduled boat to Koh Chang from Koh Samet, Rayong or Pattaya. There are no train routes in eastern Thailand.
