Koh Chang Taxi (Songthaew)

The Koh Chang taxi is a white open-sided vehicle, which shuttles back and forth between the beaches as well as to and from the ferries. In Thai language, you will hear them call songthaew – literally two rows, song thaew.

The taxis can be flagged down on the street at any time, with fares set according to routes and time of day.

Taxi Pricing Guide

Though the taxi pricing system seems madly complex and confusing at first, it starts to make sense if thought of as moving from zone to zone.

The price per person assumes two people minimum using the taxi or that it is already carrying passengers when hailed. If the taxi is actually empty when stopped or if you are the only passenger, the charge may double, but this is at the discretion of the driver and very rarely enforced.

If you are down side streets or places further off the beaten track, expect to pay an extra 50bt too.

The price after 11.00 goes up by at least 50bt across the board and if you are trying to get somewhere distant such as Bang Bao Beach (Klong Kloi), then the taxi price will escalate even further.

From Ao Sapparot Ferry Pier

The taxis from the piers operate under a different pricing system and will only leave with a minimum of 10 people, whose fares, added up, make the total required by the driver for departure. If the passengers aboard do not make 10, the driver waits for the next boat.

It is possible to leave immediately by paying more per person, thereby meeting the total required, but this needs the agreement of all of the passengers and the taxi driver will not negotiate on the sum needed.

To Ao Sapparot Ferry Pier

Heading to the pier does not require a full taxi but you need to get one that has the yellow ‘To To Pier’ sign in the front window.

The 1st collection is at 07.00 from Bang Bao (7/11), with approximate times roadside as the taxi passes down the island – Bailan at 07.10; Lonely Beach at 07.10 – 07.15; Kai Bae at 07.15 – 07.20, Klong Prao Beach at 07.20 – 07.30, White Sand Beach at 07.30 – 07.40.

The last departure from Bang Bao is at 17.00.

You can also arrange direct resort collections (call at least 1 hour before collection time needed) though there may be an extra charge.

East Coast – Koh Chang Taxi

Taxis no longer run down the East Coast and Salak Phet – it’s private charter only at 1,000bt for the whole vehicle. For Salak Khok and Chek Bae, it should be the same price.

For Long Beach, they will drop you at the actual Long Beach turning and then you call for collection (Joe at Long Beach Bungalows, 087 979 4572). For an additional fee, the songthaew may also take you all the way there.
