The Erawan Hotel – White Sand Beach – Value for Money Hotels
At the northern end of White Sand Beach, The Erawan is one of the newer small hotels on the Koh Chang accommodation scene. It has quickly earnt a glowing reputation for its style and service.
It’s a compact hotel built over 4 storeys, with 4 different a/c room types – superior, mountain view, deluxe with bathtub and seaview. All come with king size beds, ensuite shower bathrooms, TVs, safes, tea and coffee making facilities, seating areas and WiFi. Seaview rooms are the only ones with balconies. The rooms themselves use wooden flooring, wooden headboards and fittings, complimented by a tasteful brown colour scheme on the soft furnishings and bedding. It’s modern, clean and surprisingly light.
Downstairs, you’ll find the main restaurant area, which is open all day. It serves a buffet breakfast, followed by full menu for lunch and dinner – both Thai and western choices. At the rear, another comfortable lounge area opens out onto the small enclosed back garden.
Pool and Location
Up on the roof, The Erawan has cleverly added a very chic swimming pool, surrounded by layered wooden terracing with loungers, which leads down to a bar and seating area looking out over the ocean.
You can walk across the street to the beach in a couple of minutes and all the restaurants, bars and shops of White Sand Beach are on your doorstep.
Prices and Booking
The Erawan is our most expensive inclusion here, but given the high standard of its amenities and its location, the prices are still excellent for what’s on offer.
Superior rooms start at 3,850bt, with the premier Deluxe Double with Bathtub at 4,550bt – peak seaon.
Paradise Hill – Chai Chet Beach – Value for Money Hotels
Opened in 2018, Paradise Hill is a large 120 room hotel set back from the main road at the southern end of Chai Chet Beach.
The accommodation is housed in a collection of 3 storey blocks which enclose a multi-layered swimming pool, bar and simple tropical gardens. Available either as deluxe poolside or garden view, the a/c rooms have a modern look and feel, with nice touches from bedside lamps and ample storage to spacious ensuite bathrooms. Each comes with TV, safe, WiFi, tea, coffee facilities and a balcony.
Dining and Location
Outside of the rooms, the facilities are pared back, with just an on-site restaurant, which offers a buffet breakfast and full menu at other meal times and a 24 hour reception.
For restaurants and bars, heading north, you are just a few hundred metres from VJ Plaza which has a selection of cheap diners out front and diagonally oposite. U-Turn, good value Thai and western, is a hundred metres or so further on. In the other direction towards the end of the Chai Chet, there’s seafood and other choices at Signature – it also has a chic bar and cafe upstairs or Flora i Talay down on the beach offers an evening BBQ and a good beach bar. Across from Signature, Krua Palm Beach specialises in Issan food.
Paradise Hill is the sister resort to the long established Koh Chang Paradise, which sits just across the road. You can walk through that to reach the fabulous Chai Chet Beach, one of the best sections on Koh Chang. Both resorts share a large water park for kids, which comes with all manner of slides and climbs and a lifeguard. It’s next door to Paradise Hill.
Prices and Booking
Rooms in peak season at Paradise Hill range from 3,500bt for Deluxe Garden View to 3,900bt of Deluxe Pool Side.
Du Talay Hotel – White Sand Beach – Value for Money Hotels
Back on White Sand Beach, this time at the southern end, Du Talay is the smallest hotel in our picks, with just 21 rooms in a narrow, rectangular, 3 storey building of brushed concrete, which runs from the main street to the seafont.
The rooms, which have wooden floors, fixtures and features, come either as doubles or twins, both ensuite. Each floor also has two seaview rooms at the front, the one with a jacuzzi the star of the show. A TV, safe and WiFi are standard.
Dining and Location
Downstairs, the restaurant, which provides a buffet breakfast, menu lunch and dinner, has a prime location looking out over the beach. They also have a happy hour in the bar. All of the area’s amenities are also just outside the hotel door, with plenty of other choices too within walking distance
At front of the hotel, the sea is a little rocky underfoot so not ideal for swimming, but you can stroll down the sand to more suitable spots in a couple of minutes. .
Prices and Booking
Du Talay comes with a well deserved reputation of solid dependable quality, where the friendly staff, stylish well maintained rooms and beachside location, all combine to make a terrific little hotel.
Deluxe Doubles or Twins are around 2,350bt per night in peak season. The Jacuzzi option with seaview is 3,500bt to 4,000bt.
The Gallery @ Koh Chang – Klong Prao Beach
Further down the island, The Gallery @ Koh Chang is a 48 room hotel, streetside in central Klong Prao Beach.
The uniquely designed hotel is built over 4 floors, with a central glass lift dominating the cladded front facade and a good sized swimming pool and terracing off to one side. The large open roof space provides a bar and lounge area.
The a/c ensuite rooms come as either superior or deluxe, furnished with king size doubles or twin beds, TV, WiFi, safe and a balcony. Design wise, it’s nothing spectacular – muted colours, standard fittings, tiled floors – but it’s clean and practical, with plenty of storage space, as well as a balcony, so it adequately ticks the requisite boxes. There is one more room option too, the much larger studio, which has its own lounge area.
Dining and Location
Buffet breakfast is served at in-house restaurant, with lunch and dinner also available.
You can walk the back way to the sand of Klong Prao Beach in under 10 minutes, whilst the central part of the village, with its developing restaurant scene (Pilot, Kati, Kohchang 7 Korean, El Greco, Gaeng Som, Toscana Pizzeria, Moccacino and more besides) as well as Lotus’s and 7/11 is just down the street.
Prices and Booking
Superior rooms are priced at 1,800bt a night, Deluxe Doubles from 2,160bt and the Studio option at 2,880bt – peak season.
Mercure Koh Chang Hideaway – Bailan Beach
The Accor managed Mercure Koh Chang Hideaway is the only chain hotel in our pick of the best value for money hotels on the island. With 148 rooms, 2 swimming pools, restaurant, bar and spa, it is also by far the largest. Nonetheless, with the different accommodation types housed in low rise buildings of muted greys and greens, none over more than 3 floors and all connected by covered walkways, the hotel retains an intimate, relaxed feel.
The a/c ensuite rooms come in a wide array of styles from standard or superior rooms with king size beds or twins, right through to deluxe pool view and pool access and ending at individual pool villas. TVs, fridges, safes, tea, coffee making facilities and WiFi are standard. The superior options have balconies too.
Dining
The restaurant offers a buffet breakfast and then a pricey à la carte menu at other times. As a cheaper alternative, many guests also wander the few minutes into the village to eat locally at one of the many cheap diners or Lisca Beach is literally next door.
Pool and Sea
The hotel is located right on the seafront on its own 100 metre stretch of sand in Bailan Beach but in truth, this beach is not the island’s finest. The tide too in this bay retreats a fair distance at the best of times and way out at the worst of them, meaning the sea becomes of no use for a dip. Happily, the excellent in-house swimming pools more than compensate for this drawback, so it should not put you off from staying here. You can also head to Lonely Beach or Bang Bao Beach by songthaew taxi, 7 minutes and 15 minutes respectively.
Prices and Booking
Mercure Koh Chang Hideaway‘s Standard rooms (King or Twin) range from 2,250bt to 3,350bt a night, Superior (Double or Twin) from 2,950bt to 4,050bt, Deluxe Ocean View (Double or Twin) at 3,550bt to 4,650bt, Deluxe Pool Access (Double or Twin) at 3,900bt to 5,000bt and Pool Villas excellent value for money at 5,100bt to 6,200bt.
Marina Sands Resort – Klong Son – Value for Money Hotels
Marina Sands Resort is the latest addition to the Blue Haven (formerly Siam Royal View) stable, as they continue their expansion into a full range of holiday accommodation to compliment their private villas.
Situated next door to their yacht marina towards the back of the southern section of the development, the resort occupies a peaceful spot overlooking the river and mangroves. Its rooms are housed in twin 4 storey blocks joined by a raised swimming pool with terrace.
Exteriors are painted in the signature Blue Haven orange, whilst interiors follow a nautical colour scheme of pastel blues and white offset by neutral greys and blacks on the faux wooden flooring, furniture and soft furnishings. It’s clean, light and stylish – look out too for the nice touch of the wooden ceiling fans.
Room styles include double superior, double deluxe and family, a couple of 8 bed dorms and a selection of larger suites, some with two bedrooms. Each ensuite a/c style comes equipped with either king size or twin beds – dorms use bunk beds of course – TV, fridge, safe, tea/coffee facilities and WiFi. Leading off floor to ceiling patio doors a spacious balcony gives a great vantage point from all options.
Dining, Facilities and Location
Up on stilts over the river, The Terrace restaurant is the focus for dining, serving a buffet breakfast, full menu and a seafood BBQ. The pool also has its own bar.
Guests at Marina Sands can also use all the other facilities in the development – 2 feature length swimming pools, 9 hole 3 par pitch and putt or disc golf, Shambala, The Beach Club, Kids Club and 2 Spas. Activities out on the water include diving, snorkeling, kite surfing and SUP.
Blue Haven has its own private beach, but note the bay here is very shallow, so it’s generally more of a paddle than full blown swim unless you wade out a long way.
Klong Son is a very local area with not much besides a 7/11, a few other shops and the odd cheap restaurant. Indeed, separated as it is by the mountain from White Sand Beach, both it and the resort can feel a little isolated. The hotel does provide a shuttle up to the main village area as it’s quite an uncomfortable hot walk otherwise.
Prices and Booking
Marina Sands Resort‘s Double Deluxe start from 2,100bt, Superior at 2,650bt to 2,000bt, Deluxe with Balcony (Double or Twin) from 2,850bt, Large Double or Twin at 3,550bt, Family Suite at 4,700bt, Two Bedroom Suites 5,600bt – peak season rates.
