Bailan Beach Resorts and Bungalows

Bailan Beach sits just over the hill from Lonely Beach but it’s another world, a quieter, more local side to Koh Chang, with plenty of mid range accommodation via its only hotel, The Mercure Hideaway or small resorts, combined with cheaper traveller bungalows.

Despite having no real beach except a self-made one at the southern end and a tiny stretch at the northern end, the area still ticks along rather nicely.

In its own understated way, Bailan serves as both a bolthole from Lonely Beach but also as an area on the island, which offers something a bit different from the normal beach holiday.

Prices given are for the peak Xmas period via booking sites, not the hotel websites. They are intended as guides only.

Mid Range – Bailan Beach Resorts

Northern End

At the northern end fronting onto the small beach, Bailan Beach Resort is one of Koh Chang’s most dependable small 2 star resorts, popular with Europeans attracted by its good value rooms. Prices start for garden view at 1,500bt, junior double at 2,500bt.

Central Area

In the centre of the village, Harley Moon Hideaway, offers modern, clean rooms finished to the highest quality at around 2,500bt, all set in a lovely garden with a truly unique red swimming pool – it’s established itself in just a few years as one of the best Bailan Beach resorts. Note it only opens for high season (November to April).

Southern End

At the start of the beach at the southern end, The White House has reverted back to the landowners (another tenant beaten by the Covid downturn). Things are pretty much as before with its hotel style rooms at the back go from 1,400bt, with the more expensive cottages nearer to the pool at 2,900bt.

Finally, the 3 star Mercure Hideaway, run by the European Accor chain, is the only hotel in Bailan Beach. With 96 rooms, pool access and pool villas, this represents the most upmarket choice on the beach, prices starting at 3,000bt and going up to 5,500bt for a pool villa.

Bailan Beach Bungalows

Backpackers and travellers originally kickstarted Bailan’s development off as they sought smoky refuge from some of their more exuberant clan partying next door at Lonely Beach and nowadays you can still find some great picks at very reasonable prices.

Northern End

Bailan Beach Resort above shares the beach with the excellent The Mangrove (currently closed but likely to open for 22/23 season ), a fascinatingly under the radar spot, with chic thatch bungalows and partially open air cold water bathrooms. Their 11 rooms are in the 1,500bt price bracket, increasing in peak season.

Also worth a mention at this end, the octagonal bungalows of Bailan Bay Resort cling to the hillside just before you enter the village, still quietly popular after all these years, similar rates to The Mangrove.

Various other mid-range small bungalow resorts are found in this immediate vicinity. Faye Orchid Resort is on the ocean side above Bailan Beach Resort with Kamrai Resort (currently closed) next door. On the opposite side, Lazy Republique, the pick of the bunch starts things off at the base of the little hill, followed by St Tropez, Green Land Resort and Baan Sanook .

There’s nothing particularly fancy or designer about any of these resorts, but you will get good value bungalows, 1,000bt to 2,500bt a night, in a quiet garden setting, all with swimming pools.

Also at this end, Vanara, changed hands in the last couple of years and now combines newly renovated bungalows on one side with the old wooden style on the other. Prices are from 1,000bt a night.

Across the road, Jungle Garden, still has that old beach hut style – wood, bamboo, on stilts and with thatch roofs, ensuite – but it does it very well, stylish bathrooms in particular. Prices start at 600bt rising to 1,000bt. In the same area, 3 Trees Guesthouse (also known as Koh Chang Backpackers Hostel) has added more rooms to the existing renovated set, making about 8 in total – 500bt upwards.

By The Sea (Central)

In the centre down the little street by Harley Moon Hideaway, Bailan View is under new English and Thai owners, the same as the cafe bar, Zest, up on the main street. The bungalows are being rebuilt and a swimming pool added but they do hope to open at the end of the year – watch this space.

Down at the bottom by the sea, Green Cottage has older style bungalows in 3 rows, with a swimming pool, prices from 1,200bt a night. It’s the same owners as Green Land Resort above. Next to them, Bai Yard Bungalows (currently closed) has a handful of older bungalows from 750bt.

Next door and one of best of the cheaper Bailan Beach resorts, Elephant Bay Resort has a prime location by the sea – colourfully painted little beach huts with a swimming pool, from 1,100bt at 1,800bt a night for standard and twin or larger suites at 2,800bt.

At the far end and also on the ocean, Kohchang 7 has an eclectic combination of fan huts and a/c cabanas, nothing fancy but cheap at from 400bt upwards.

Southern End

The Austrian owned Lucky Gecko Garden (currently closed but will open for 22/23) sits on the corner of The White House entrance, a handful of well kept rooms in a small garden, from 1,800bt a night. Incidentally, along the small street that leads to it from The Happy Turtle, there’s a host of bungalows and small houses to rent, worth a look if you are thinking of staying a few months.

Oppposite the turning down to The White House, tucked away about 100 metres up, Blue Garden Resort is a nice quiet option, similar to other resorts in the area with standard bungalows, again French owned, rooms from 1,000bt.

Finally, Rock Inn has a selection of rooms up to 1,200bt per night on the hill overlooking the entrance to Mercure Hideaway.
