The 999 bus run by The Transport Company is a popular and cheap choice for travelling from Bangkok to the Koh Chang ferry pier at Ao Thammachat. You can also connect to Laem Ngop Pier for boat connections to Koh Mak.
999 Bus – Bangkok Departure
The 999 bus leaves from the Eastern Bus Station (Ekamai) located on the Sukhumvit Road, best reached using the BTS (Skytrain), Sukkhumvit Line. The 999 ticket booth is at the front of the Bus Station on the left hand side.
As of April 2023, the only daily departure is at 07.45, price 292bt. We recommend either nipping up there the day before to secure your seats or arriving an hour to 45 minutes before departure on your travel day.
On its way down to Koh Chang, the 999 Bus calls at Suvarnabhumi Airport Transportation Centre (Bus Station) at 08.20.
It’s very easy to get to the Transportation Centre from the Airport Terminal with the free shuttle bus. This leaves every ten minutes, from Arrivals, Floor 2, Door 3, Traffic Lane 3 (the white tarpaulin marquee) or Departures, Floor 4, Door 1. Use the Express route A (4,2), travel time 5 to 7 minutes, rather than the ordinary route A, unless you have a particular hankering to tour the whole Airport Complex.
999 Bus – Going to Koh Chang
The 999 bus will stop at a gas station along the way for a 20 minute fill-up, where you can buy snacks, grab a quick plate of Thai food and a coffee. It also pulls in at Chantaburi Bus Station after about 5 hours for another 5/10 minute break. It then heads to the ferry pier for Koh Chang, with the 07.45 (08.20 Airport) reaching Thammachat Pier at around 13.30.
999 Bus – Going to Koh Mak
If you are heading to Koh Mak, you should let them know at Ekamai. The 07.45 (08.20, Airport) will arrive at about 13.30 at Ao Thammachat Pier.
From there, you then take a share songthaew taxi at 80bt per person to Laem Ngop Pier (for Koh Mak), which is 10 minutes down the coast. You may make the Leelawadee at 14.00, but otherwise you will can fall back on the 16.00 Panan if necessary.
All speedboats cost 550bt per person and take an hour but you should always check the timetables ahead of time, especially in low season (May to October).
From Laem Ngop Pier, speedboats to Koh Wai leave at either 11.00 (Koh Mak Ferry) or 12.00 (Koh Waii Paradise), both 450bt per person. Unfortunately, this means you cannot make a same day connection to the island if using the 999 Bus.
999 Bus – Back to Bangkok
The 999 bus has one daily return service back to Bangkok at 14.30 from Ao Thammachat Pier.
Boat Connection from Koh Chang
From Koh Chang, you will need to catch the 12.45 or 13.45 ferry for the 14.30 bus. If using songthaew taxis, give yourself enough time to travel down the island from where you are staying. Leaving from Lonely Beach at around 11.30 or 12.30 would work.
Boat Connection from Koh Mak
If coming from Koh Mak, the speedboat for the 14.30 bus is the 11.30 Leelawadee, which arrives at 12.30 at Laem Ngop Pier. From Laem Ngop, hop in a songthaew share taxi back to Ao Thammachat.
About the Return Trip
The return 999 bus trip, does will stop at Chantaburi Bus Station and elsewhere have its own 20 minute stop for gas. It reaches Suvarnabhumi Airport Transportation Centre at 19.30 and Ekamai Bus Station 45 minutes to an hour later… depending on the notorious Bangkok traffic.
The 999 buses are clean, safe and relatively new. Each seat does have a safety belt and there is a toilet on board.

Hi, do you know whereabouts the 999 bus briefly stops at the Ao Thammachart pier, and is it ok to just jump on it and buy the ticket back to Bangkok on the bus? Thank you
Hello! Do you know if the 999 bus from Bangkok to Koh Chang will be running on Monday 15th April this year? Aware it is Songkran. If so I imagine it will be busy – would buying two tickets on the Sunday (when we land in Bangkok) be ok, or is there an option to buy online?
Thank you

Yes, it will be but buy ahead – there are online bookings sites which include the Bangkok buses.

Normally shuts mid afternoon, so won’t work for you. Need to go early in the morning. Or buy the ticket online at one of the bus agencies

Try and get there by lunchtime as they can close early in the afternoon but in theory, it’s open till 16.00
