Over the last few years, Bangkok and indeed Thailand has enthusiastically bought into the global trend for stylish hostels and dormitories, which have become so popular with the modern backpacker.
Koh Chang too has readily jumped on this bandwagon to meet demand and as a result, travellers to the island can now find a very good selection of hostels right across the different beaches.
Prices range from 350bt upwards for a bunk bed in a mixed or gender separated a/c dorm, with room sizes varying from 4 beds up to 8. Bathrooms are shared but again male/female designated. There is usually a communal living area where you can make coffee and tea as well have access to a fridge, watch the DVD’s and peruse the books. Individual safe boxes are standard.
Some of the hostels also offer standard private accommodation in single and double rooms, so facilities can be excellent, with in-house restaurants, bars and even swimming pools.
Pajamas Hostel – Chai Chet Beach – Top Koh Chang Hostels
Pajamas were the first to set up shop on the island when they opened on Chai Chet Beach a couple of years ago.
In a colour scheme brimming with Greek island summer exuberance, they offer a mix of dorms and private rooms set around a kidney shaped swimming pool, with the in-house restaurant next door at the excellent Nong Bua Seafood.
One of the nicest stretches of beach on Koh Chang is under 2 minutes walk away. Highly recommended.
Habitat Hostel – Chai Chet Beach – Top Koh Chang Hostels
Located on one half of the bottom floor of VJ Apartments in Chai Chet, this brand new hostel offers several 4 bed male or female dorms, with security boxes and other nice design touches.
There’s a communal area, good clean bathrooms and a upbeat fresh feel about the place. Private rooms in a similar vein will be added later this year, meaning it occupies the complete ground floor area of the buidling.
The hostel is at the top end of VJ Plaza, giving guests plenty of options for shops, restaurants and bars. The excellent Chai Chet Beach is about 8 minutes walk away.
My Hostel – Lonely Beach – Top Koh Chang Hostels
After a complete rebuild, the brand new My Hostel occupies the former Lemon Bar area in Lonely Beach at the far southern end of the village.
Entering from the street through the open restaurant and bar, you drop down to a great swimming pool with lots of loungers before continuing on down again to find the rooms on the bottom level. Here, housed in individual portakabin style blocks, brightly coloured 8 bed dorms contrast with industrial styled grey and brushed concrete single rooms to capture the modern traveller vibe.
The beach is 10 minutes walk away, with all the bars and restaurants on your doorstep.
Sleepy Owl Hostel – Lonely Beach – Top Koh Chang Hostels
Accessed through the coffee shop at the top of Soi 2 in Lonely Beach, Sleepy Owl Hostel offers basic single rooms with bathroom ensuite alongside mixed and male/female cutely designed 4 bed dorms.
There’s a small communal space near the entrance where you can make tea and coffee, but you can also splash out at the excellent cafe for breakfast. More dorm rooms will open over the next year.
Bee Sleep – Klong Prao Beach – Top Koh Chang Hostels
Located in the row of shop houses just near Klong Prao Resort, Bee Sleep offers a more basic set up of large communal male or female dorms with mattresses on the floor rather than bunk beds. You’ll find small bathrooms next door to each room and downstairs, there’s a nice communal area.
This area offers up plenty of shops and restaurants and the beach is just over 5 minutes walk away. It’s definitely worth looking at for groups travelling together.
BB Hostel – Lonely Beach – Top Koh Chang Hostels
Located at the rear of the BB complex in Lonely Beach, the small hostel offers 4 mixed dorms and a handful of private fan single rooms. It’s basic, clean and functional but you do have access to the divers’ pool out the front, as well as a very relaxed and bohemian communal area, decent wifi and all round friendly vibe. There’s also a gym and daily yoga next door.
Whilst the actual beach is about 10 minutes walk away, all the restaurants, bars and shops of the village itself are just a few steps away.
Asia Backpackers – Bang Bao – Top Koh Chang Hostels
A ten minute walk from Bang Bao Pier, Asia Backpackers provides a mix of private ensuite fan and a/c bungalows, alongside three 4 bunk-bed dorms, with shared washing facilities, all set in a spacious well kept garden overlooking the road. The main reception building is over two storeys, with the top floor communal area offering a bar, food, seating and a bbq area.
There are a couple of cheap restaurants on the main road and on the small soi leading down to the pier itself. The more adventurous can walk the 15 minutes to the nearest beach at Hat Sai Noi and then another 10 to Bang Bao Beach Klong Goi, but having the budget for a motorbike would definitely help you explore the island.
A no frills establishment, clean, friendly and favourably priced.
