Koh Chang resorts in the mid range price bracket of 1,500bt to 3,000bt are spread right across the island and this week we round up our top 6 favourite picks from the dizzying list of choices out there.
In our picks for the Koh Chang resorts, we have tried to include resorts suitable for families, resorts perfect for couples and also resorts that might suit travellers who want to push the boat out for a few nights.
Drawing from both our own experience and from local feedback, we have found all these Koh Chang resorts provide that something extra that sets them apart from the crowd. Of course, these picks are subjective too and none of the resorts are perfect, but we are confident that a stay in any of them will end with you looking to tag a few more days onto your initial booking.
Koh Chang Resorts – Kai Bae Beach
Not surprisingly, Kai Bae Beach is home to three of our favourite Koh Chang resort picks. It’s an area that offers a bit of everything, with luxury resorts such as The Awa, The Chill and Gajapuri alongside some guesthouses and even backpacker choices such as Siam Cottage. Principally, though, it offers lots of mid range accommodation in keeping with its laid back development as a tourist centre.
The Garden Resort
Per Night: from, 2,000bt
At the southern end of the beach with access through a small arch off the main street, The Garden Resort is an oasis of calm in the heart of Kai Bae Beach. The cute a/c bungalows are dotted around a pretty tropical garden with a small swimming pool. There’s a cafe restaurant open all day and out at the front, its own cocktail bar, Backstage. The resort is just 5 minutes walk to the beach, but also perfectly situated for the local restaurants and bars. A well established, professionally run Koh Chang resort.
Per Night: from 1,500bt
Opposite the Awa and Gajapuri, The Stage has grown in popularity over the last few years. It’s a compact resort, set back from the road, with a/c rooms and cottages styled like beach huts, all connected by wooden decking around two small swimming pools. There’s a cafe on site alongside the well reviewed Moo 4 bistro. The resort is just a short walk from the beach and in the heart of the Kai Bae Beach action.
Kai Bae Beach Resort
Per Night: from 2,200bt
Sitting directly on the sand at the southern end of Kai Bae Beach, the resort offers a whole host of bungalows and family rooms, including some cabanas with roof terraces. There’s also a swimming pool, restaurant and kayaks. For families looking to do their own thing, this makes a great base, representing excellent value for money. You can easily walk up to Kai Bae street to choose from the restaurants and bars.
Koh Chang Resorts – Klong Prao Beach
Home in the main to large high end Koh Chang resorts, this is our pick for a great mid range alternative.
Per Night: from 2,500bt
Located up near the road, this is a small family friendly resort in the centre of Klong Prao about 10 minutes walk away from the beach. The 15 a/c bungalows are similar in style, clean, compact but spacious, with the added bonus of great wifi. The bigger than expected swimming pool serves as a magnet for the kids. The owner and staff go out of their way to help and can organize any of the Koh Chang activities.
Koh Chang Resorts – Koh Chang East Coast
Off most people’s radars is the Koh Chang East Coast, so here’s a mid range resort that might change your thinking.
Amber Sands Resort
Per Night: from 2,500bt
First in line of 3 small resorts in Dan Khao on the little red sand beach overlooking the mainland, shortly after Centrepoint ferry. South African owned, the resort is set in a perfectly manicured garden with bungalows, beach house, swimming pool and restaurant. A very professionally run resort, Amber Sands has become a popular getaway for those seeking a touch of seclusion, couples especially. That said, a great family villa is also available. The resort is nearer enough to White Sand Beach (15 minutes) to not feel too isolated, though renting a bike would be a real boon to your stay.
Koh Chang Resorts – Bailan Beach
Bailan Beach is the unassuming neighbour to the Lonely Beach party scene and this resort captures its mood perfectly.
Per Night: from 1,500bt
For our individual choice, we have picked out The Mangrove at the northern end of Bailan Beach. This is a Koh Chang original bungalow resort, with 15 or so hippy chic wooden fan bungalows dotted amongst the trees and looking out to sea. It’s wonderfully back to nature, with open bathrooms and mountain water showers, verandahs and the odd wild monkey. All paths lead down to the sea and the restaurant come bar area with its spectacular high thatch roof. Throw in the sun deck, cushions and hammocks, a small private beach, interesting guests and gregarious owner and you have a laid back, peaceful spot to escape the crowds.
Koh Chang Resorts – Near Misses
For its location alone, White Sand Beach Resort, at the very far northern end of the beach almost sneaked in. Yet, that’s a long walk down the sand to get to the action, awkward if the tide is high, leaving you with a 70bt ride across the mountain in a taxi as your fallback.
In Bang Bao, Nirvana Resort has been on the scene for many years now. It’s one of Koh Chang’s reliable off the beaten track resorts in a terrific location on the bay.
