Bhu Tarn Resort and Spa – Klong Prao Beach

Bhu Tarn Resort and Spa is one of Koh Chang’s smartest 3 star resorts.

Located at the northern end of the Klong Prao Beach, Bhu Tarn Resort and Spa has 21 single and double rooms, together with a swimming pool, spa and floating restaurant.

Rooms at Bhu Tarn Resort

Rooms are divided into 3 categories, Bhu Tara, Bhu Fah or Bhu Tawan.

  • Bhu Tara offers twin or double beds in a single large 50 sqm space with attached bathroom and balcony, effectively one half of a twin roomed house.
  • Aimed at families, Bhu Fah connects the two halves of the twin houses together to create 4 rooms of 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • The deluxe choices is Bhu Tawan, with its 3 rooms lay-out, a living area added alongside bedroom and bathroom.

Amenities in the rooms include individually controlled air-conditioning, LCD TVs, mini-bar, in-room safe, bath-tub and shower, hairdryer, bathroom accessories and wifi as standard. The deluxe rooms also provide refridgerators and coffee-tea makers.

Pool and Location

Just back from the main road, the resort’s entrance lies in the middle of a uniform row of shop-houses. So uniform, in fact, you can easily go straight past. Once inside, however, the resort opens out onto a very private area, where the rooms surround the central swimming pool. At the rear, there is more accommodation lining the bank of an inland waterway, mangroves as a backdrop.

Bhu Tarn’s location road-side is a drawback, but you can walk to the beach in 5 minutes. Once there, you’ll be on one of Koh Chang’s prettiest stretches of sand. Amble one way to the northern Klong Prao Beach canal or set off the other way to Chai Chet and its resorts along the sea.

Spa

The Wari Spa offers massage, steam room and treatments, open daily from 08.00 to 19.00.

Dining at Bhu Tarn

Complimentary breakfast is served at its Bhu Patta restaurant, which also has a full menu of western and Thai dishes. Feature dining takes place on the unique floating restaurant on the waterway. There is a pool bar too for cocktails and cold drinks while taking a dip.

The food receives differing reviews, with the buffet breakfast a mixed bag. Step outside the resort, though and you have plenty of cheap alternatives in amongst all those shop-houses – the tiny Annie P’s recommended for burgers.

At night, you can travel very easily by taxi to Klong Prao Beach, lots of choices near the temple or on the northern canal with its seafood. Going the other way, it’s only a couple of minutes into Chai Chet, where you’ll find seafood at Nong Bua, Italian at Marco’s, beach BBQ at Flora I Talay.

Down on the beach, Wari Coffee is also within walking distance of the resort.

Bhu Tarn Resort and Spa – Our Verdict

Bhu Tarn Resort is owned and run by the huge sprawling Klong Prao Resort, popular with Thai and European tour groups.

The resort design is functional and conservative rather than innovative. The rooms, with their traditional Lanna roofs and practical wooden furniture, are clean, airy and spacious. However, the rooms’ walls, judging by guest feedback are thin, so acoustics from next door can be a problem.

In conclusion, Bhu Tarn Resort has become a dark-horse choice in this area. It’s a solid small 3 star resort and definitely worth adding to the possibles list of Koh Chang accommodation.

Around the central temple, it has a good mix of Thai and Western restaurants and plenty of shops, all a short walk only from the sea. It’s not a nightlife area. The area boasts the main waterfall at Klong Plu, elephant camps and cookery schools.
