Opened in late 2014, Bhu Tarn Resort and Spa is one of Koh Chang’s newest 3 star resorts.
About Bhu Tarn Resort and Spa
Located at the northern end of the Klong Prao Beach, Bhu Tarn Resort and Spa has 21 single and double rooms, together with a swimming pool, spa and floating restaurant.
Bhu Tarn Resort sits just back from the main road in a uniform row of shop-houses, indeed it’s easier enough to go straight past without spotting it.
Once inside, however, the resort opens out onto a very private area with the the rooms surrounding the central swimming pool. At the rear, there is more accommodation lining the bank of an inland waterway, with mangroves as a backdrop.
Rooms are divided into 3 categories, Bhu Tara, Bhu Fah or Bhu Tawan. Bhu Tara offers twin or double beds in a single large 50 sqm space with attached bathroom and balcony, effectively one half of a twin roomed house. Bhu Fah style is aimed at families, connecting the two halves of the twin houses together to create 4 rooms of 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Bhu Tawan is the deluxe choice, with its 3 rooms lay-out adding a living area alongside bedroom and bathroom.
Amenities in the rooms include individually controlled air-conditioning, LCD TVs, mini-bar, in-room safe, bath-tub and shower, hairdryer, bathroom accessories and wifi as standard. The deluxe rooms also provide refridgerators and coffee-tea makers.
Complimentary breakfast is served at its Bhu Patta restaurant, which also has a full menu of western and Thai dishes. Feature dining takes place on the unique floating restaurant on the waterway. There is a pool bar too for cocktails and cold drinks while taking a dip.
The food receives differing reviews, with the buffet breakfast a mixed bag. Step outside the resort, though and you have plenty of cheap alternatives in amongst all those shop-houses. At night, you can travel very easily by taxi to Klong Prao Beach, lots of choices near the temple or on the northern canal with its seafood. Going the other way, it’s only a couple of minutes into Chai Chet, where you’ll find restaurants in the plazas or at the southern end, near the beach
The Wari Spa offers massage, steam room and treatments, open daily from 08.00am to 19.00.
Bhu Tarn Resort and Spa – Our Verdict
Bhu Tarn Resort has been open for over a year now and signs are that it is finding its feet.
It’s owned and run by the huge sprawling Klong Prao Resort, which dominates this end of Klong Prao and is popular with Thai and European tour groups. At the outset, it felt like an spot to accommodate the overspill from there. By tweaking a few things, such as now serving the breakfast in-house, rather than making the guests troop down to the other resort, it feels more like its own entity. The staff too have upped their game and on the whole, seem professional and attentive.
The resort design is functional and conservative rather than innovative. The rooms, with their traditional Lanna roofs and practical wooden furniture, are clean, airy and spacious. However, the rooms’ walls, judging by guest feedback, are thin so acoustics from next door can be a problem.
Being situated on the road is not ideal, but it is only a genuine 5 minutes walk down to the beach, where you’ll find yourself on one of Koh Chang’s prettiest stretches of sand. You can amble one way to the northern Klong Prao Beach canal or set off in the other direction all the way to Chai Chet and its resorts along the sea.
In conclusion, Bhu Tarn Resort has become a dark-horse choice in this area, a solid small resort, definitely worth adding to your list of possibles.

The peaceful Klong Prao Beach is a lovely long 3km stretch of sand split by two canals at either end. With its concentration of large upmarket resorts right on the beach, it attracts families, couples and just a few independent travellers. Around the central temple, it has a good mix of Thai and Western restaurants and plenty of shops, all a short walk only from the sea. It’s not a nightlife area. The area boasts the main waterfall at Klong Plu, elephant camps and cookery schools.
