Best Hotels, Resorts and Bungalows on Koh Chang 2017-18

Choosing Koh Chang’s Best Hotels, Resorts and Bungalows

best hotels resorts bungalows koh chang

We are frequently asked to list our best hotels, our top resorts or our most recommended bungalows on Koh Chang. As with all ‘best of lists’, it is of course a nigh on impossible task to give you the definitive answer. One person’s idyllic retreat represents another person’s worst nightmare. For every resort included, another resort has to be omitted and so on.

On our side, however, wo do have vast experience born of living on Koh Chang for many years and so we can absolutely point you in the right direction when you come to make your accommodation picks.

To that end, we offer below our top choices in individual categories of luxury hotels, mid range resorts and budget bungalows. This should give you a complete range of solid options where you can be confident your stay will be at last satisfactory and most probably excellent.

Koh Chang’s Best Hotels, Resorts and Bungalows – Luxury

KC Grande Resort – White Sand Beach

koh-chang-hotels

Located at the northern end of White Sand Beach, KC Grande Resort and Spa has ceaselessly upgraded over the last few years to develop into one of Koh Chang’s best hotels.

It offers a whole host of accommodation options from newly built designer villas on the sand to luxury rooms by the swimming pool overlooking the beach, whilst on the other side of the road, a 4 storey hotel block completes the picture with its own wonderful rooftop pool. There are yet more pools too, a spa, a coffee shop and in-house restaurants.

Prices befit a 4/5 star resort at the top end but there are cheaper alternatives for some of the older rooms.

And of course, step outside the resort or walk along the sand and you’ll find the teeming bustling atmosphere of White Sand Beach, with all its own restaurants, bars, other resorts, shops and amenities. In fact that may be the resort’s one drawback, as this busy beach, the most developed and touristy area on the island, is not to everyone’s taste.

Rates: from 4,000bt per night upwards, high season.

Gajapuri Resort – Kai Bae Beach

In the heart of Kai Bae Beach, Gajapuri Resort has also expanded over the last few years with the addition of a lovely infinity style pool, new restaurant and more bungalows.

All the buildings and rooms are constructed from natural materials, each hidden away behind bamboo and foliage, linked by charming wooden walkways leading you slowly down towards the ocean. Gajapuri also offers a spa and feature restaurant.

It’s located on the seafront, though this spot in Kai Bae is not the best, with the beach disappearing completely at high tide and rocks underfoot when swimming. But that’s a minor drawback given it’s only 2 minutes walk to a lovely stretch of sand further to the north.

Meanwhile, step outside the resort and Kai Bae Beach is a busy tourist village, with everything you may need for eating, drinking and shopping.

All in all, this is a very private, grown-up and sophisticated resort, with excellent but discreet service, ideal for couples but certainly not exclusively, with families too made to feel very much at home.

Rates: from 4,600bt per night upwards, high season.

Koh Chang’s Best Hotels, Resorts and Bungalows – Mid Range

Amber Sands – Dan Khao

Amber Sands Resort is a small family friendly, couples friendly, singles friendly resort on Koh Chang’s east coast, just a few kilometres beynd the ferries.

Its 8 stylishly furnished bungalows, 5 superior, 2 beach and one family, are located around the central small pool, all of which fronts onto the beach. The gardens are immaculately kept, rooms always clean, service polite and unobtrusive and the affable South African hosts are always on hand to help.

There’s a restaurant, some massage but most of all there is absolute peace and quiet, a haven away from the masses on the west coast and that is what you are paying for.

Yes, the east coast beaches are not in the same league as the west coast and you are separated out from the main action on the island, but if you know this on booking, you’ll not be disappointed. It’s a terrific hideaway.

Rates: from 3,500bt per night upwards, high season.

Chivapuri Resort – Bang Bao Beach (Klong Goi)

chivapuri-resort-bang-bao-beach

Located at the far end of Bang Bao Beach (Klong Goi), Chivapuri Beach Resort is another delightful resort of just 20 rooms.

The resort rooms are housed in huge Lanna style houses, with lots of polished wood finishings, subtle decor and tiling, each building nicely spaced apart and set back under the trees. There’s a good in-house restaurant and of course, massage too. The swimming pool, as pictured at the top of this page, sits literally steps away from the sand and sea.

The beach here is one of Koh Chang’s finest, shallow water for kids to potter, great views across the nicely sheltered bay, some laid back restaurants and bars further along for you to explore.

As for drawbacks, Bang Bao Beach is situated at the very far end of the island, so getting about can be trickier, but taxis do now regularly shuttle back and forth. The beach too does fill up during the day, but that is mostly at the top end away from Chivapuri and within the resort, the ultra friendly staff and management maintain a calm and very private atmosphere.

So, those small caveats aside, Chivapuri comes highly recommended as one of Koh Chang’s best resorts.

Rates: from 4,500bt per night upwards, high season.

Koh Chang’s Best Hotels, Resorts and Bungalows – Budget

Oasis Bungalows – Lonely Beach

oasis-bungalows-lonely-beach

Run by a very friendly Dutch couple, Oasis Bungalows sits surrounded by jungle at the top of the so called Soi 3 high above Lonely Beach.

Offering a mixture of deluxe and jungle bungalows at rates that happily suit either single travellers or couples, Oasis has a deserved reputation as one of Koh Chang’s best cheap bungalow resorts. Its laid back and peaceful atmosphere serves as a perfect antidote to the blood, sweat and tears of backpacker life down below in the village.

Added in late 2015, the structurally magnificent treehouse with its views far far out to sea, further enhances the chilled out vibe of the central restaurant area beneath, where the tunes are mellow and the food is a cut above most places around.

After many years, Oasis remains universally well-reviewed, recommended and liked, so it’s well worth hunting out.

Rates: from 450bt per night upwards, high season.

Nature Beach Resort – Lonely Beach

nature-beach-resort-lonely-beach

Somewhat of a Koh Chang institution after nearly 18 years in the centre of Lonely Beach, Nature Beach Resort has itself expanded over the last year, with the addition of around 25 bungalows and a very cute swimming pool looking out over the sea.

The new rooms, clean and practical with a few design twists, complement nicely the older but still stylish bungalows at the rear, with all of them just metres from the ocean. The restaurant remains the focal point for both guests and visitors alike, with its food no more than OK but as a spot for people watching and hanging-out, it’s hard to beat. The staff meanwhile remain a source of constant complaint, along with the poor wifi, but that’s almost par for the course.

No, it’s Nature’s location which seals the deal for that real Koh Chang backpacker beach experience – absolutely bang on the sand, now complete with swimming pool for floating around to a few beats, reasonable room rates, the odd big party and the most wonderful sunsets. It’s nowhere near perfect but for a few days, it can fit the bill very nicely.

Rates: from 650bt per night upwards, high season.
